Put on a happy face

The split seconds it takes for Missy M. to squelch her desire to tell Bill Maher's laughing audience to Cheney themselves and regain her composure. And they call *us*, the Coalition of the Wild-Eyed?

I have no idea who she is, but those pictures are just CRUEL!

Posted by: Amber at August 16, 2004 12:36 AM -- for all your warmth and loving kindness needs. She seems to not mention her Bill Maher performance this week.

Posted by: kerry at August 16, 2004 05:47 PM

Holy moly, does she look like a Kabuki villain or what!?!

(Kabuki makeup is very exaggerated, like Greek comic/tragic masks, for the same reason - no telephoto lenses in those days, and the characterization is very melodramatic. (Anime/manga fans will see a lot of history and familiar themes here)

C'mon, now, she expresses this admalistration's emotions perfectly, having obviously graduated from the Cheney Finishing School...who does she hate more, us or her very own self?

Posted by: ronjazz at August 17, 2004 04:31 PM

Awwww, leave Michelle alone, will ya?
Trying to defend the indefensible(especially when you're fairly ignorant of most of the subject matter) is no picnic, as anyone who saw Michelle on Maher can testify.

Hey Michelle, how 'bout a short time? Or long time? O O??

Posted by: Sailor at August 17, 2004 04:47 PM

She had the same expressions in pix on

Posted by: Max at August 17, 2004 04:56 PM

Hee hee! I gotta say, though, that I've seen her picture at or whatever it is she writes for. Her blown back, windswept hair just looks ludicrous. Like she's trying WAY too hard to be sexy.

Posted by: Rich at August 17, 2004 04:58 PM

Malkin was almost laughed off the dais, and she really had a very difficult time dealing with it. Perhaps she doesn't get out much, but she seemed very shocked that people might laugh at her.

What was more striking, though, was that people were laughing at her defense of Bush - that he's a uniter, that he brought us all together, etc., blah blah blah. Obviously Maher's audience recognizes this spinning pile of poop as the stinkfest that it is.

Posted by: Louise at August 17, 2004 04:58 PM

I also enjoyed her impassioned defense of rounding up and imprisoning thousands of loyal Japanese Americans during WWII.

Was it just me, or was she suggesting that this technique needed to be employed again against "disloyal" Americans. I think that I got her not-so-subliminal message.

Her next book defends Hitler's final solution, the Bataan Death March, the My Lai Massacre, and the frat party at Abu Ghraib.

Posted by: Jake Emerson at August 17, 2004 05:15 PM

Reminds me of the beginning of the movie "Election." There's a passage in which the director keeps freezing Reese Witherspoon's face mid-word, so she's making these rather grotesque faces.

Man oh man. The 'wingers are trying very hard to get women into the fold, Coulter, Ingraham, and Malkin, now. That they've been trying this hard for this long and those three are the best they've done...
She's kind of the Alan Keyes of wingnuttery.

any links to scenes or files for the show? I missed it

Posted by: marceaumarceau at August 17, 2004 05:45 PM

She didn't do herself any favors on Real Time. She came off a bit arrogant and snotty. She's probably not that bad in person but it's a shame to see someone of obvious intelligence so misguided and wrong.

Posted by: spearNmagicHelmet at August 17, 2004 05:49 PM

She certainly didn't handle public ridicule very well. Ann Coulter she aint.

Based on those pictures alone, let's put her in a gaddamm camp. Obviously dangerous.

We can't afford to take any chances.

Posted by: Alex at August 17, 2004 06:54 PM

If you guys want hte full backstory to this, you need to check out Orcinus' blog if you're not familiar with him. He's a Real Live Journalist who'se been reporting on Home Grown American Hate groups for many years, and has books on the subject, and who has just finished one on the Manzanar situation and knows a lot about it.

Between him and a lawyer who was guest blogging at of all places the Volokh Conspiracy, she hasn't a shred of credibility left. And Orcinus has personal experience dealing wiht her in the newspaper business as well.

(I've heard today that her parents were part of the Marcos entourage, so that may explain her anti-liberalism and elitist attitudes towards fellow Americans of immigrant descent. A thoroughly "colonized mind", so to speak.)

Posted by: bellatrys at August 17, 2004 07:13 PM

Anyone else suspect that Ann Coulter can roll her head and reveal her "game face" like that Oni netsuke? If I ever expected to meet her, I'd make sure I had my sticky rice and some powerful sutras to throw. (either that or she's one of those Detachable Head vampire demons, the ones that seem like normal humans until the sun goes down, and then their heads come off and fly about looking for victims - Yes, I know way too much morbid world mythology for my own comfort)

My wife and I attended the taping of the show. The audience was very hostile to her even though the show's producer had told us to be nice beforehand.

I took your images and assembled a Videowall tribute to Michelle Malkin.

Not as completely skeery as my Videowall tribute to Peggy Noonan, but close.

Posted by: stranger at August 17, 2004 08:39 PM

Nevertheless, since you are talking about looks here, Malkin was still, by far, the best looking person on that show, stacked as it was, three-against-one, as it always is.

Posted by: Friedrich Nietzsche at August 17, 2004 09:06 PM

Yeah, Neiwert tried to push this on me, too. A little Googling ought to cure your ignorance.

Posted by: NeoDude at August 17, 2004 10:35 PM

You want to know about Paul Ekman. He is a UCSF professor of psychology who discovered that these tiny, short-lived facial expressions— like you see on Michele Malkin's face in these pictures— can reveal that a person is deliberately lying.

Malcom Gladwell wrote a piece for The New Yorker awhile back about Ekman and his work that should make interesting reading.

You realize, of course, that none of those pictures are providing conclusive evidence that the divine Miss M is not the smokingest commentator in the United States. Because she is.

Posted by: Justin Slotman at August 18, 2004 05:21 AM

Back in the 1960s an older black man was profiled on television because he allegedly made a living lecturing KKK chapters (do they have 'chapters'?) on the 'natural athletic superiority' of African-Americans (who were called Negroes in those days).

This guy was a hit with the Klan because he was feeding their prejudice and fantasies; the Klan was a hit with him because they paid in cash, and apparently plenty of it.

Malkin and Keyes have a similar relationship with the GOP, I think. It's not amusing now, either.

Posted by: Jon R. Koppenhoefer at August 18, 2004 07:48 AM

As much as I disagree with many of her arguments, Malkin's political leaning and points of view does not make her an Uncle Tom or "sellout", as Mr.Koppenhoefer is obviously infering.

Posted by: Specialty_Terry at August 18, 2004 08:45 AM

If you pick out individual video frames of ANYONE presenting an intense argument, you will find stuff like this.

This shows NOTHING about Michelle Malkin. It shows a lot about the dishonesty of those seeking to discredit her.

Posted by: williamp at August 18, 2004 11:08 AM

What a twit. She wasn't "presenting an intense argument", she was responding to being laughed at. And if you weren't so ignorant, you would know that she discredits herself by with her own words.

Posted by: ts at August 18, 2004 02:39 PM

Malkin is a true Cundit. A highly paid media "ho" getting richer by throwing red meat to the loons.

Posted by: vastleftycon at August 18, 2004 04:20 PM

Can't help it: I think she is much more beautiful on those images than on the one on her own page.

Heh. I checked out the picture on her site. I think she uses the same airbrush artist who did the Ayn Rand photos on her book covers.

Posted by: abstractJohn at August 18, 2004 09:42 PM

Just imagine the sparks that would fly in a Malkin--Vanden Heuval sandwich, even though Vanden Heuval's got some miles on her--that smug demeanor and those pursed lips and that tongue ready-to-spit for the workers would make it all worth while.

Posted by: Sean at August 18, 2004 11:13 PM

williamp, you're right. Individual frames CAN mkae anyone look foolish. If you'd seen the actual show, though, you'd know that these stills are pretty accurate representations of her only-slightly-restrained reaction to the audience. My wife and I had a great time waiting for her head to explode. Maybe she'll go all Scanners on us some other time. If she'd have not held back, brain matter would've ended up in D.L.'s drink. Pretty damned funny performance.

Posted by: art at August 18, 2004 11:30 PM

Oh, boy. These clips do not do justice to her at all.

I don't believe I've ever seen anyone exemplify the description "sour puss" better than she does. Frankly, I don't think she was surprised by the reaction. Rather, I thought she came off as one of those rightnuts who believes they are poor, waaaah, victims of the libr00l media.

I just laughed that she was completely incapable of actually acting like one of the typical loudmouths, but you could tell that she desperately wanted to follow in Ann's footsteps.

Posted by: Jack Duluoz at August 19, 2004 05:25 AM

I can't stand Malkin. I also can't stand the sexualized insults hurled at her. I hated it when wingnuts did it to Margaret Cho, and I hate it now.

Posted by: larkspur at August 19, 2004 06:16 PM

No, she is not hot. Sorry, but she just ain't. She's famous, and that's what makes people want to say she's hot, but she's not. She wasn't hot in her "sitting around the house in sweats" photos from her old site, she's not hot in the ridiculous shopping-mall glamour shot she uses now, and she's not hot on TV. She's not bad, but she's not hot.

Unfortunately, for the ignorant masses, famous + ok looking = hot.

Guys, lets be honest. She's not butt-ugly (on the outside anyway), but she's just NOT HOT.

As far as her views go, she's just another TV wannabe saying the idoitic things she has to say in order to get famous. I doubt she has any strong conviction really about anything, just pretends she does to fire up others.

That's not immoral in and of its self. It's the fact that what she says in order to fire up others and get famous (and, in turn, have slobbering idiots who obviously don't have much experience with hot women call her hot), consists mainly of lies that are hurtful others and hurtful to all of us as a society. That's what makes her an opportunistic immoral lowlife who hates our freedoms and is only worthy of being spat upon. That and the fact that she thinks she's hot when she's not.

Posted by: wha? at August 20, 2004 03:38 AM

Michelle Malkin deserves whatever ridicule she gets. If you choose to live in your irrational mind and believe stupidity, then don't be surprised when you get bitch-slapped by reality. As for those defending her, you're just as delusional and hopeless as she is.

Posted by: whatisreality? at August 20, 2004 03:49 AM

whatisreality, you *know* that you and I share a lot of the same beliefs. I can assure you: I agree that Malkin's irrational, inane, and contemptible yammering can and should be met with appropriate force.

But Malkin provides plenty of ammo. There's no need to call her a Cundit or a ho, or to say she needs to get laid, or to pity the man who has to fuck her. Her opinions and beliefs are attack-worthy. Trashing her because she is (as I am) in constant possession of a vagina is just lame and diversionary.

I am not defending her. I am simply asking that we not get sidetracked by cheap shots. We need to work the mission.

Posted by: larkspur at August 20, 2004 07:34 AM

UPDATE: Oopsie. I just now read this on kerry's August 17 entry:

"To those who are desperately attempting to read anything more into the post, than it being a direct taunting of a sad little winger who lost her cool when a broadcast audience laughed at her vapid stream of logic........ you have a right to your opinion but it's wrong."

Although I'm actually *not* opposed to direct taunting of a sad little winger, I get it now that I wasn't meant to analyze the implications.

Going away now.

Posted by: larkspur at August 20, 2004 08:27 AM

I don't think she's attractive in the least , and I do find asian women attractive. She looks like a cheap asian hooker in "Platoon" or some other 'nam movie.

Posted by: renato at August 20, 2004 11:13 AM

Ms. Malkin still looks better than Heinz-Kerry on her better days. Thanks Michelle you're doing a great job.

Posted by: Richard J. Long at August 20, 2004 03:48 PM

Oh, come on! Malkin was just tired of the tratment she was getting from Mahr's typically one-sided audience and standing up for herself, when some in the audience audibly sneered at things she had said.
If she was saying something we liked, we would be calling her a brave heroine, who knows how to stand up for herself.
