Debunking

If one of your more well meaning friends sends you this:

Bush/Kerry

Every year an independent tax watchdog group analyzes the average tax burden on Americans, and then calculates the "Tax Freedom Day."

This is the day after which the money you earn goes to you, not the government.

This year, tax freedom day was April 11th. That's the earliest it has been since 1991. It's latest day ever was May 2nd, which occurred in 2000. Notice anything special about those dates?

Today, John Kerry gave a speech in which he claimed Americans are actually paying more taxes under Bush, despite the tax cuts. He gave no explanation and provided no data for this claim.

Another interesting fact: Both George Bush and John Kerry are wealthy men.
Bush owns only one home, his ranch in Texas. Kerry owns 4 mansions, all worth several million dollars (His ski resort home in Idaho is an old barn brought over from Europe in pieces. Not your average A-frame).

Bush paid $250,000 in taxes this year; Kerry paid $90,000. Does that sound right? The man who presently wants to raise your taxes obviously has figured out a way to avoid paying his own.

Pass this on. Only ten weeks until the election.

Send them this

In 2003:

* John Kerry's 2003 tax filing has his total personal gross income (married filing separately) as $395,338 paying $90,575 in taxes at an approximate adjusted rate of 22%.

* George Bush's 2003 tax filing has his total gross income (married filing jointly) as $822,126 paying $227,490 in taxes at an approximate rate of 25%.

note: When you factor in the Theresa element, they have a pre-nuptial on property and assets, and it's not relevant.

it ain't rocket science folks.

Ok. You've got my curiousity up. So the guy who made just shy of 400K (single) paid at a rate within 2% of the guy who claimed a bit more than twice that, over 800K (filing jointly). What is your point? I guess I'm *not* a rocket scientist. You mean Bush should have paid more?

I think he means that, in spite of the implication in the main portion of the article, both paid taxes commensurate with their income, and that Kerry did *not* dodge his fair share of tax burden. You may have been confused by all of the scientific notation and references to solid fuel propellants.

Yep, pretty much what Joe said.

that, and the barn thingy seemed poignant.

I dunno. If I was getting paid as much as Kerry
does I'd feel at least a LITTLE bit obligated to show up for work a LOT more often.

I dunno. If I were president of the USA, I think Id feel at least a LITTLE bit obligated to show up for work a LOT more often. Maybe then I would have had time to read the memos and learn about the real threats against the USA.

I find the other facts of most interest. Are the statements about Tax Freedom Day accurate? What's the name of the watchdog group?
