Despite the overwhelming losses last night in the House, Senate and pResidential races, here in Dallas County we can take solace in the local judicial races. Picking up 4 bench seats with a new sheriff in town. The majority of the races both Dem and Rep were won by very tight margins, offering up enough hope to get us over this bone crushing surprise that's created the "national mandate".
Due to this unarguable mandate provided by the US voters, in both the popular and electoral votes, Bush has his work cut out for him. To whom much is given, much is expected, no?
Bush short To Do List
* Retain his NSA, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense and Atty General.
* Complete the Plame investigation.
* Become a uniter, not a divider.
* Usher in a new era of responsibility.
* Mend international fences.
* Balance budget or freeze spending... or both.
* Make the US deaths in Iraq stand for something.
* Get Osama and or re-engage in Afghanistan with significant force.
* Stop using 9/11 as justification for everything.
* Face the fact that 'W' doesn't stand for women until policies reflect the rhetoric.
* How to effectively secure the nation with NG troops overseas.
* How to increase an all volunteer military when the odds of being in combat are up by 50% or more.
The nature of the current administration is such that they're still speeding down a path already laid and the expectation they'll spin on a dime to adjust to the needs of the country is a bit far-fetched. Items that of significance in the next 4 years that will continue to widen the culture gap are;
The Divisive Agenda
* All of Bush's campaign promises and the reinterpretation of them as reality grabs hold.
* 1 to 3 Supreme Court Justices and the litmus test that Bush claims not to have.
* Iraq, North Korea, Iran, Pakistan vs India, Afghanistan, Sudan, Indonesia, Malaysia etc.
* France.
* Gay marriage.
* Ten Commandments.
* TV, video, film, music and skirt length.
* Voter rights.
* FCC regulations.
* Science vs Religion / Ideology vs Policy.
* School textbook content.
* NCLB and other federal mandates that increase government and override states' rights.
* Patriot Act II.
* Civil rights and what the nation is truly willing to sacrifice.
just off the top of my head
and... lest we forget.
Posted by kerry at November 3, 2004 08:23 AM | TrackBackReporting from NYC - very somber mood here. All of my co-workers at Aperture, a non-profit fine-arts foundation, are suffering from dysthymia. The streets are quiet and people look stunned. My boyfriend has suggested that NYC and other willing states and supporters secede to create United Nations land. He has generously offered to be king, which I approve of since I'll obviously be queen. We vow to keep the budget balanced, refrain from bombing other countries that don't bomb us first, and promote high-quality education with an emphasis on the arts and sciences. Who wants to join us?
Posted by: Dana at November 3, 2004 10:43 AMThanks for the rundown "off the top of your head." Yup, that just about covers it. And a special thanks for the link to the "Never Forget" website. I didn't know that all of these awesome films and video clips were collected in one convenient location. Great reference site.
Another ray of hope/silver lining: This administration will now be held accountable for their actions. They've got nobody else on whom they can pin the blame! My husband has been saying for months now that as much as he hated to see this administration continue to rape and pillage both here and abroad, if Kerry were to win the repugs would blame the quagmire they've created in the middle east (as well as a host of ills domestically) on his presidency. If we survive four more years of the evil empire without the country actually crumbling down around us, perhaps it will at least wake up half the population who have lost touch with reality. I mean, they're pretty dense but maybe, just maybe they'll get it by the end of Bush's second term.
Posted by: Lulu at November 3, 2004 10:46 AMOh, oh, oh! I forgot to mention that there is another scenario altogether. Bush could be forced out of office prior to the end of a four year term - either impeached or forced to resign. Because eventually all that bad karma is going to catch up with him. Time will tell.....
Posted by: Lulu at November 3, 2004 10:58 AMJust want to say that I feel no need to do any "soul searching," as the media blowhards suggest Dems should be doing after Tuesday's Republican wins.
They say the "values" motivation was strong. OK, but let's be clear: that's a euphemism for being anti-gay. Some people will say that the antiabortion angle was important but that issue has been around for years and it hasn't been the deal breaker the gay marriage issue was Tuesday. People came out of the woodwork to ban gay marriage and, while they were at it, support the candidate they felt was in line with their views.
As a democrat, I am glad those people finally found the polls. However, as a Christian whose religious values propel me to embrace a liberal social and economic agenda, I will not apologize for this race. I will not change my attitude toward gays because we lost a few races Tuesday. I will not exploit antigay feelings to put my team over the top.
If anyone should be doing some soul searching, it's George W. Bush. He personally has a moderate view on gay rights. When he attends church, he goes to a church that performs gay union ceremonies. He confesses that he doesn't know whether being gay is natural or not. Yet he was willing to ride a wave of antigay fear to a second term in office.
We ran a hard race against a ruthless opponent and lost on an issue we have no reason to compromise on. No apologies.
Posted by: chillmoth at November 4, 2004 04:28 AMFirst thing, cheers to Kerry for stepping down and ending any election results divisiveness, couple things you forgot on Bushes to do list:
-Break Social Security
-Help Exxon Surpass Microsoft for richest company
-Watch the elimination of the population of the Sudan
-Visit Kenny boy in Houston
-Devaulue the Dollar till it equals the Peso
-Have the FCC make sure that only 3 corporations control the airwaves (wait, that one needs to be checked off, sorry)
Can anyone think of any others?
Posted by: CB at November 4, 2004 06:11 AMI recently read and have to echo the comments of blogger Glenn Fleishman (which were published on the link http://www.boingboing.net/2004/11/03/kerry_concedes.html) regarding his fears about what this election result means for thouse outside the Christian right, although my angle on it is somewhat from the opposite perspective from his:
I am a late-30s white Anglo man, raised and proud to be an open-minded Christian (raised a Congregationalist, worshiping as an Episcopalian these days), who's ancestors have been in this country literally since the first settlements at Plymouth and Boston. I work in the computer technology industry at a senior technical/managerial level, and have a resume going back over 20 years in this business.
I'm married to a beautiful, intelligent Jewish woman of Eastern European descent, who's father's parents came to this country to escape was was going on in Europe during the 1930's and 40's. We have two young boys (three years and seven months), who through the tradition of the Jewish faith being passed from mother to children, are therefore also Jews.
For the first time in my life, I am very, very afraid of my national government. Clearly, America has just re-elected, and given a carte blanche mandate to, a Fascist government. If someone doesn't believe that the NeoCon movement is nothing more than a modern Americanized Fascism, then perhaps this might help convince them - http://www.oldamericancentury.org/14pts.htm
Despite my having a family line in the USA going back 350+ years, I am strongly considering taking my wife and children out of the country. We are fortunate that we live in Massachusetts - I have no fear of our immediate safety. However I feel its only a matter of time before right-wing fundamentalist Christianity takes the same turn that historically it always does, and begins looking for "outsiders" to blame for all its ills. This time around, I think Muslims will suffer the brunt of that, but eventually, I think all non-Christians will be at risk, and that's not a chance I'm willing to take with my family.
So I guess the options are:
A. Join'em
B. Run
If I have to join, where can I find a Bible thats says I should hate people, my current one doesn't. If I'm gonna run, what does it take to be an Austrian citizen? Can I just show up and tell them I am the swap America sent for Ah-nuld?
Posted by: CB at November 4, 2004 08:50 AMBush wins and paranoia is on the increase. Many considering leaving country but none actually doing so. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Blah!
Keep discounting faith and values and the Christian majority will keep handing you defeat on the first Tuesday of every other November.
