I often muse about what shape the US would take if it legally and bloodlessly broke up into several regional, autonomous countries -- and darn if it doesn't look like the free and slave states map, with a few slight modifications. Plus -- Hawaii would become a Japanese prefecture and Alaska would become the new Kuwait.

Maybe we should just dissolve this giant corporation into several regional chunks and a very thin "American Union" overlay (for bulk purchases and military defense). I'd be willing to give it a try.

Let's not also forget that the Democrats at the time wanted to sue for peace with the South and leave slavery in place in order to save the Union.

Had McClellan won the 1864 election, the US would be two countries. Slavery would remain in place for decades longer thanks to Buchanan and McClellan.
