60 years after Hiroshima

“I remember the flash of light. Then a blast of wind came into the shelter and I was blown on to some rocks. I lost consciousness then somebody called, "Are you all right?" I was shocked to see people with eyeballs hanging out, faces black, some with flesh hanging off. Some had internal organs coming out of their abdomen. They were holding their arms out asking for water. I heard people saying, "Help me! Help me!" but I couldn't do anything because I was so frightened, shaking with fear.”

This is just one chilling passage from this profoundly disturbing account of the aftermath of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I read it and wept. My mother, Yoko, survived this horror.

Human Beings in a civilized society must ask themselves: Did 140,000 people in Hiroshima die in vain on August 6, 1945? Did over 2,000 people at the World Trade Center die in vain on September 11, 2001? Why are we allowing the leaders in this country to ignore the dead? How can we passively accept their incompetence and willful ignorance which is making the world a more dangerous place than it was on 9/11? Are we going to idly accept their incompetence – some of us even inexplicably cheering them on - and one day experience the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ourselves? I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep repeating it because this is too important to let go. This IS NOT a game of “my dick is bigger than your dick” partisan politics. It’s about the future of our country and our planet. While the current administration spend their days managing the “spin” of this or that exposed deceit they fail to honor the fallen. They fail to honor the soldiers. They fail to accept responsibility for their countless mistakes. They fail to protect American citizens. They fail, they fail, they fail, they fail. When will everyone – 100% of America – wake up to that fact? And when that happens, will it be too late?

Please do not ever put" honoring soldiers" with a comment about bombing Japan. Your mother survived, my father died slowly and painfully in a Japanese prison camp. Your quotes about a civilized society do not fit any treatment kidnapped chinese women felt, the total disregard for captured soldiers, and their own people that took place in WW II by the Japanese, I am disgusted.

Um...I'm afraid you've missed the point entirely. I'm not comparing wars or bombings or degree of suffering. I'm condemning violence. Period. Violence begets violence. It accomplishes nothing. When will we learn - or rather when will world leaders learn - that war is not the answer? How many times must history repeat itself? If we do not evolve as a species we risk extinction.
