For a Constitutional "literalist" Bush and crew sure are going out of their way to force interpretation. Forget about separation of powers or any accountability, our president now believes himself responsible to no one.
We're either a democracy or we're not. Unrestricted and unregulated spying on citizens certainly undermines the fine line between what we used to use to distiguish the us from the them.
Impeachment used to sound too strong a word and now censure even, seems toothless. Time for some old fashioned come-uppence.
Don't you miss the days when it was just about sex?
Posted by kerry at December 21, 2005 01:21 PMEven as a Canadian this Patriot Act scares me. Now how do I know that when I am communicating with someone south of the border that I have complete lack of assumed privacy. Its more the principle of unfettered (sp?) access to our communications is very concerning.
If the terrorists wanted to change our lives, take away our rights, and change the fundamental principles upon which our democracies were formed, then they are certainly winning. We are not much better in Canada for some of the laws that have been enacted post 9/11
