WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 — The Bush administration said Thursday that it would seek about $120 billion in additional financing to pay for continuing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan through 2006.The request shows that the cost of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan has remained at virtually the same level for several years, despite hopes that a large number of the American troops may leave Iraq by the end of the year.
The $120 billion includes money for the fiscal year that began in October in the form of a $70 billion supplemental spending request, which had been expected. It also includes $50 billion in the overall budget request for the first months of the 2007 fiscal year that President Bush will submit to Congress on Monday, a figure that was described as basically a placeholder until a more specific number can be developed.
If, instead of jumping pell-mell into a war of choice, we as a nation had invested $440 billion in completing all of our goals in Afghanistan... would Bush have needed to use Osama's name twice in his State of the Union address?
WASHINGTON - A former U.S. occupation official in Iraq pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to steal more than $2 million and rigging bids on $8.6 million in reconstruction contracts.Robert J. Stein, 50, of Fayetteville, N.C., admitted that he and his coconspirators smuggled millions of dollars out of Iraq into the United States aboard commercial airliners and laundered cash through multiple bank accounts in Switzerland, Amsterdam and Romania.
Stein was a Defense Department employee who served as a contract official for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, controlling more than $82 million in funds slated for rebuilding the Middle Eastern country.
Another fine example of fiscally responsible GOP management. Remember, these are your tax-payer dollars. If you feel they're being mismanaged, change the managers.
Posted by kerry at February 5, 2006 04:23 AMBefore the war, according to the CIA factbook, Iraqi per capita income was about $2500/year, with a population of about 26 million. If we were willing to spend $440 billion, instead of fighting this disastrous war, why didn't we just say, "We'll give every man, woman and child in Iraq the equivalent of seven years' income, payable upon the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the Baath party"?
Oh yeah, 'cause Bush is the Antichrist.
