What's with the either or approach to the Second Amendment from the right?
I agree with this approach
Where I grew up, I was so close to nature that I once leaned out my kitchen window to take aim at a deer that had stepped into the backyard (the animal bolted before I could shoot). Now I am a city dweller, too busy and too far away from the country to do much hunting. But I have a son and daughter of my own now, and I would like the chance to pass on some of what my father taught me. It's hard to write this without sounding a little mawkish, but what I learned from hunting is that things in life aren't always black and white, and that they're not always easy, but the effort put in has a direct correlation to your success. You have to do it right. You respect the gun, you respect the animal and you respect the rules, and that translates to real life. It's hard to kill something, but you develop deep appreciation of animals and the outdoors when you do it regularly. I know nonhunters think that's absurd logic, and I understand why. But if it's part of your culture and part of the road to being a man, you find a way to face up to the hard parts and the raw emotions of it and you do it honorably. Shooting an animal is often a gut-wrenching act, and not one that's taken lightly by anyone I know. You respect it, you honor it and you never waste it. Most of all, you just give thanks for it.
But yet, find this repulsive...
There’s about a 50% chance that a gun-less person will go buy a firearm if you take him out to the range for an afternoon of shooting. But there’s about a 100% chance he’ll go buy a firearm if you hand him a check for that express purpose. Just make sure you pick someone who is at least slightly to the left of you politically – I prefer moderates and those who “vote for the best person” – and you will soon have a fellow right-wing, gun-toting friend.
Just imagine what America would look like if we all did the same thing this Christmas. Before long there would be no more Democratic Congress, no more Speaker Pelosi, and no more Internal Revenue Service. Individual freedom would win out over collectivism one gun owner at a time.
You may say that I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join me. And the whole Islamic world will know we live with guns.
Maybe it's the failure to comprehend why no one talks about how important the 2nd Amendment is to keeping the 1st and the loudest "gun advocates" rail against control while staying mum on the loss off freedom, civil rights and little things like Habeus Corpus.
C'est la Guerre.
